It is not unusual for people to talk about learning English as though it were a straightforward process. You just have to have enough motivation, the right books and a dictionary, and then you can learn English, right?

What this implies is that learning English is something that can happen in any order. Whether you learn about grammar or vocabulary first, for instance, does not matter to some. It does not matter which language skills (reading, writing, listening or speaking) you start with or even whether you focus on improving one skill at a time or all of them together.

The reality is that many people who try to learn English by themselves often end up confused and frustrated because they do not know where to start. They may even be unable to finish what they started because they were never taught how to go about it in the first place. But there are some very good resources out there that will help you understand what it takes to become proficient in English as a second language (ESL).
