Carrom is a board game played in India and all over the world, mainly in the former British colonies (in the Caribbean islands and South Asia). The shots are very similar to billiards but it is played on a smaller table with lighter balls.

The rules:

1. Place the player’s men in any pocket between the two back corners according to his choice2. Start with a cue ball shot from anywhere on the side or from behind the line (marked line).3. The opponent will then hit his own ball from where he pleases to make his counter move4. If a player commits a foul or pockets any of his opponent’s balls, he loses that turn5. The player continues playing until all his pieces are pocketed6.

To make a carrom board, you’ll need:

5.5′ x 3.5′ piece of 3/4″ plywood

2″ x 1″ x 5′ piece of hardwood (I used oak)

1″ pocket hole screws

Wood glue

3/4″ or 1″ dowel rods to act as pegs for your string. You can also buy pre-made ones for a few bucks, or just use what you have laying around.

1. Cut the 3/4″ plywood into two pieces; one at 26″ long, and one at 18″ long. You could also use two 13″ pieces, or whatever size you want, as long as it’s under 30 inches in length for regulation play.

2. Cut your hardwood into long rectangles that fit into each of the grooves on the plywood from step 1. I didn’t measure mine, but I’d guess they were around 6 inches long and 2 inches wide. For the longer sides of the board (the 26″ pieces) cut 4 rectangles total; two for each side of the board. For the shorter side (18″) only cut 2; this will be explained later on.

3. Label each of your rect

Note: Wood can be replaced with plastic. If you use wood, then you need to seal it with paint otherwise it will get damaged when it gets wet.
