I’ve seen a number of threads about this, so I thought I’d share my experience. I own a 2010 VW Jetta Sportwagen. One day, I was driving and some asshole in a Honda Civic tried to merge in front of me and cut me off. He ended up scratching my driver side door.
Took it to the dealer and they told me they would have to repaint the whole quarter panel and that would cost $2,000 if they ordered the paint from VW, over $600 if they ordered it from somewhere else. I decided to get a second opinion at PDR.
The damage is too large for them to repair, so they told me the quarter panel will have to be replaced. To do it right, the whole door must be removed and the fender will need to be removed as well ($1,300). If you’re not doing it for resale value, you can buy a pre-painted door for ~$900 and install it yourself. Just make sure you get all your parts from the same source or you’ll end up with mismatched paint (I learned that after ordering VW/Audi parts online).
