What is a Chaat Masala? Chaat masala used in Indian snacks and appetizers. It can be made by mixing together various spices. The spices used in the masala are usually roasted and then ground.

It is also sprinkled on the shredded potatoes used in Aloo tikki burgers. Some people use it in tomato-based curries as well.

1) Black salt: 1 teaspoon

2) Red chili powder: 1 tablespoon

3) Roasted cumin powder: 1 teaspoon

4) Coriander powder: 2 teaspoons

5) Amchoor powder (dry mango powder): 2 teaspoons

This blend of spices contains a variety of ingredients including raw mango powder, amchoor powder, coriander powder, salt, red chili powder, cumin seeds and black pepper.

Tamarind pulp or concentrate is the main ingredient in chaat masala. The pulp is available in a block or an extract form in Asian grocery stores. I have found it in the international aisle of some supermarkets as well.

Ingredients for Making Chaat Masala:

1/2 cup cilantro leaves

1/4 cup mint leaves chopped fine

1 teaspoon black salt (available at Indian grocery stores)

1 teaspoon red chili powder (optional)

1 teaspoon coriander powder

1/2 teaspoon roasted cumin seeds powder (or regular cumin powder)

1 teaspoon chaat masala
