Birds eye chili, bird’s eye chili, bird eye chili, birds chili or Thai chili is a chili pepper, a cultivar from the species Capsicum annuum, commonly found in Ethiopia and across Southeast Asia. It may be mistaken for a similar-looking chili derived from the species Capsicum frutescens, the cultivar “siling labuyo”.

The birds eye chili plant is a perennial with small, tapering fruits, often two or three, at a node. The fruits are very pungent. The birds eye chili is small but is quite hot (piquant). It measures around 100000–225000 Scoville Units. For comparison, most jalapeño peppers range from 2,500 to 8,000 on the Scoville scale; Tabasco sauce rates at 30,000 to 50,000 and pure capsaicin (the chemical responsible for the pungency of pepper plants) rates around 16 million Scoville units.

Because of the extreme pungency of this pepper it can be used in place of black pepper and Tabasco sauce. For example in Vietnamese Pho it is used instead of black pepper as it does not affect taste of beef broth like black pepper does.
