Elaichi is the fruit of a tree that is native to the Indian subcontinent. The scientific name for elaichi is badari. It’s botanical names are: Zizyphus Jujuba Mill and Ziziphus mauritiana Lam. Elaichi is a round shaped fruit with a sweet taste and a short shelf-life. Its skin is smooth, thick and deep purple in colour when ripe but turns brown when dry. The pulp is dried in the sun to make a fragrant, spicy flavoured powder known as elaichi or badari ka atta in Hindi or Badriphal or Badami shahi in Sanskrit. Elaichi powder finds its use in all kinds of Indian sweets and desserts like laddu, halwa, kulfi etc. It can also be added to vegetables while cooking them or sprinkled on top of paranthas or chapatis while eating.”

Roasting helps in releasing aroma from these oil glands and makes the seeds aromatic.*
