The Nutmeg Bookshelf

The Nutmeg Bookshelf is a blog about the nuts and bolts on running a business. We focus on business basics, including marketing, cash flow management, human resources & legal issues.

For the past 18 years we have been at the service of small businesses in Connecticut. We have done that by providing outstanding value to our clients through the delivery of top rated accounting services with a smile.

We know how hard it is to run a business – we are entrepreneurs just like you.

The Nutmeg Bookshelf is a blog devoted to the nuts and bolts of running a small business.

We all love to read about how people started their companies, but we rarely hear about the day-to-day challenges that keep us up at night. The Nutmeg Bookshelf will offer practical insight into tackling real life problems, no fluff allowed.

My name is Sam Maine, and I’m a self-employed product designer and author from Guilford, CT. Over the years I’ve started several businesses, including a socially conscious T shirt company called Pembury House and a line of stationery products called Hello Lucky. And through it all I’ve juggled my clients work (I’ve worked with some great companies like Etsy, Food52 and A Beautiful Mess) and my writing projects (I’ve written two books for Chronicle Books called Modern Calligraphy and How To Be An Explorer Of The World).

Welcome to the Nutmeg Bookshelf. We are a group of intrepid employees at Nutmeg Corporation, a software development firm that works on the cutting edge of technology and business. We have many years of experience in technology, entrepreneurship and project management. If you ever wanted to know how we run our business, you’ve come to the right place.

We’ll also be using this site as a repository for all the books we recommend. Feel free to comment or contact us if you have any questions or feedback!

It’s no secret that we love books.

And it’s no secret that we’ve been publishing a lot of them.

We thought it might be helpful to have a little blog where we could talk about the nuts and bolts of running a small business. How do you set up a website? What are some good ways to identify great book ideas? How do you juggle your day job with building your side business? Why did we decide to start Nutmeg? How did we decide to release our first book, The Obstacle is the Way? Should you use Kickstarter? Why or why not? What role does social media play in our success? Where are we going from here?

So this is that blog. We’re calling it The Nutmeg Bookshelf and we hope it can serve as a place for us to talk about what we’ve learned along the way so far, and for other people doing similar things to share their stories as well. We may also feature guest bloggers from time to time.

We’ll be posting every Tuesday afternoon. If there’s something specific you’d like us to address, please contact us at nutmegbookshelf@gmail.com or via Twitter at @nutmegbookshelv.

It’s been a busy month here at Nutmeg, and I wanted to take a moment to share some of the exciting new things that have happened.

First, we launched the new Nutmeg editor. This is a really big deal for us as it means that you no longer need to use the old Adobe Flash based editor. For any new books, you’ll be able to create them in our redesigned HTML5 editor. If you have already created a book in our old editor and would like to update it, just drop us an email and we’ll get it upgraded for you.

Second, we launched our new pricing structure. We’ve made some major changes here so please take a minute to review our plans and take advantage of the new discounts when you upgrade or sign up for a new account.

Third, we’ve opened up all of our Premium features so that they are available in all of our plans (except Free). We’re thrilled with how many people are getting value out of these premium features and we want to make sure everyone has access. (If you’re interested in learning more about these Premium Features, you can find out more on this page.)

And lastly, I’m excited to announce that we are now accepting credit cards! Previously Nutmeg was

Nutmeg is a great way to add flavor to your recipes. It also helps with digestion, and relieves stomach pain. Nutmeg can also help heal wounds, and it is commonly used as a topical ointment for rheumatism and neuralgia.

Nutmeg can be purchased whole or ground. If you purchase whole nutmegs, they will keep fresh in the pantry for several months if they are stored in an airtight container. Ground nutmeg can be stored in an airtight container in the pantry for up to six months. Whole nutmegs will stay fresh longer if they are stored in the refrigerator, but since they are so small it’s easy to lose them in the back of the drawer!

There are countless ways to use nutmeg, but today we will focus on one of our favorite recipes: Mashed Potatoes with Nutmeg.

Nutmeg is a spice used in cooking and baking. It is known for its warming and aromatic qualities. It is also used in sweet dishes, such as apple pie, doughnuts, and gingerbread.

The original source of nutmeg is the Banda Islands in Indonesia (Wikipedia).

Nutmegs are the dry seed of an evergreen tree. The seed is enclosed by a lacy red membrane called mace, another spice. The tree takes about seven years to produce fruit; the pits are covered with a scarlet coating that dries to brown when ripe. Nutmegs that have been left out in the sun will split open, revealing the nut inside (Wikipedia).

Nutmeg has been used in medicine for hundreds of years and was thought to be an effective cure for toothaches, rheumatism, colds and nausea. Nowadays it is still believed to be useful for those ailments but not backed up by scientific evidence (Edensgarden).

In my mind nutmeg has a sweet aroma, like cinnamon or gingerbread cookies fresh out of the oven. I think this blog should give readers that same feeling: warm and cozy but professional at the same time.
