Fall is my favorite season, and one of the reasons why I love it so much is because of Mulling Spices. I love mulling spices because it smells amazing in the house, it makes your home smell cozy and warm, plus you can eat them! I have tried many different recipes for mulling spices and have been trying to perfect my own recipe for the last few years. This is what I have come up with so far and it tastes great!

Materials:

1/2 c. Whole Cloves

1/2 c. Allspice Berries

2 tbsp. Cinnamon Sticks

1 tbsp. Ginger Root, chopped

Directions:**Mix all ingredients together in a bowl, cover with a cheese cloth or paper towel, then you are ready to begin!**

To Make Mulled Wine: Bring a large pot of water to boil, add mulling spice mixture (about 1 tsp per cup). Add wine and stir until hot but not boiling. Serve hot or warm with cinnamon sticks as stirrers. For best results use on a cold winter night when you have friends over for dinner.*

I’m mulling spices and mixtures, as well as other fall related recipes. I also post on making mulling spices and mixtures.

I have been mulling in my family for years, but just recently started posting on it. Most of the stuff I post is not mine, but of others who have taken the time to write about it.

I post recipes for mulled wine, hot apple cider, cranberry drinks, pumpkin drinks and more. I’m not a big fan of hot chocolate (too much like eating melted candy bars), so I don’t post hot chocolate recipes, but there are plenty out there if you want them.

The title of the blog comes from a song by the band The Decemberists called “Mulling Spice”. It’s a great song with great lyrics and a good sound track to mulling. There is also an excellent video by the same name with footage of mulled spices in action.

I made a mulling spice blend the other day. I have been mulling cider for years, but never tried mulling spices. This year I decided to do it up right. I researched exactly what spices are appropriate for mulled drinks, found a recipe for a good one, and went to work.

I was surprised at just how easy it is to make your own mulling spices. You can buy them if you like – I like the ones from Trader Joe’s because they are organic and they are cheap – but they are not really difficult to make yourself. They will keep a long time in an airtight container.

The basic mix is:

1/2 cup whole cloves

1/4 cup whole allspice berries

1/4 cup cinnamon sticks (I get these at my local Indian grocery store)

1 (3-inch) piece of fresh ginger, peeled and sliced into thin coins

Then you just toss in whatever else you want: nutmeg, cardamom pods, coriander seeds…whatever strikes your fancy. Be sure to remove the bay leaves before serving!

Mulling spices are a great way to add flavor to your beverage without adding additional sugars. There are many varieties of spices and blends available, but the basic mulling spices remain the same: cinnamon, allspice, cloves, and cardamom.

You can buy pre-made mulling mixes at many stores or you can make your own mulling spice blend.

Mulled cider is a traditional fall drink that is said to warm you on a chilly day. Mulled wine also warms you up while offering a variety of flavors. The beautiful thing about mulling spices is that they work with so many different types of drinks.

Mulled Wine Recipe:
