I have a confession to make: I hate using a garlic press. I know, I know, it’s hard to believe that anyone could hate such a fabulous kitchen tool. But I’ve never been able to figure them out. They all seem so complicated.

I’d much rather just smash the garlic with the flat side of my knife, or use a knife to mince it finely. It’s faster, and my hands don’t smell like garlic afterwards!

And yet, most recipes tell us to use the dreaded garlic press. So what am I supposed to do?

Garlic presses are one of those kitchen gadgets that you either love or hate. They do make it a snap to turn garlic into a fine mince, and if you don’t mind the smell, it’s quick and easy. But for some cooks, the machine seems too much like cheating. How can pressing your garlic into tiny bits possibly be as good as chopping it up yourself?

Taste is subjective; you have to decide whether you like the texture of pressed garlic, but texture isn’t everything: there are other advantages to using a garlic press.

First, a garlic press is fast. If you mince your own garlic, you probably know the routine: peel the clove(s), chop off the ends, cut through the skin lengthwise and remove any green sprout (some people use a small paring knife to do all this). Then, depending on how coarsely you want to chop it, run the knife through it again horizontally. That’s at least four motions per clove — and chopping can be tedious if you don’t own an electric knife. A press does all that in one motion — just push down on one end of the clove.

I’ve decided to share with you how I use a garlic press. The truth is that it is a very simple device, yet many people still don’t know how to use it properly. That’s why I have written this blog – to help my friends in their time of need!

First things first: never press on the edge of the garlic clove with the press. You should always place your garlic clove in the center of the holes and press on the flat surface at the bottom of the press. This way you will be using more of the garlic and therefore save money by using less product!

The next thing to remember is that you should never hold down the plunger for too long. If you do, you will find that your fingers will become covered in garlic juice, which can be quite unpleasant. I recommend that you simply hold down the plunger for around four seconds and then release it before repeating this process five or six times.

So there you have it! Follow these tips and you’ll be well on your way to becoming a master at using a garlic press in no time at all!

First peel your cloves and remove most of their papery skins to avoid getting them stuck in your press. If you have more time, leaving the papery skins on will help protect your hands from smelling like raw garlic all day.

There’s no special trick for peeling the cloves if you’re using a handy-dandy newfangled electric peeler, but if you’re using a knife then there’s a trick: first slice off the root end of each clove and lay all your pieces cut-side down on your cutting board in order to keep
