How to Make Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice

I’m a big fan of making my own spice blends. Store bought spice blends are convenient, but they often contain additives, preservatives and anti-caking agents. By making them at home, you can control exactly what goes into your blend and have fresh spices at the ready when you need them.

Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice is super easy to make with spices that you probably already have on hand. It’s a mix of cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and ginger.

A lot of recipes use allspice in their pumpkin pie spice blend which is fine if you like it. I don’t; I find it too overpowering. Therefore, I left it out. This blend is a bit more subtle than most commercial pumpkin pie spice blends, but I think that’s why I like it so much.

It is not too early to start thinking about Thanksgiving, especially if you are planning to make your pumpkin pies from scratch. But before you buy store-bought pumpkin pie spice, why not try making your own? This blend is a good starting point, but you can tweak it to your own tastes.

I love pumpkin pie. It’s one of my favorite things about fall! The only downside? Pumpkin pie spice is expensive, unless you happen to have a specialty store nearby that sells it in bulk.

Last year, I tried making my own pumpkin pie spice for the first time. I was shocked at how easy it was, and even more shocked at how much money I was saving.

Making your own homemade pumpkin pie spice from scratch is super easy and requires no special skills or ingredients! All you need is cinnamon, cloves, ginger, nutmeg, and allspice!

If you’re feeling fancy, you can upgrade to Ceylon cinnamon (I highly recommend it) or get really fancy by using freshly ground nutmeg and cloves (the flavor is far superior)! For the purposes of this article though, I’ll be sticking with the staples.

It’s Fall, and that means it’s pumpkin pie season. If you’re making a pie from a fresh pumpkin, you’ll need to use some pumpkin pie spice to flavor the filling. If you don’t have any on hand, or if you want to blend your own for better flavor, here’s how to make your own pumpkin pie spice:

1. Mix equal parts ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, ground ginger and ground cloves. For example, for 1 teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice, use 1/4 teaspoon each of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and cloves.

2. Store the pumpkin pie spice in an airtight container until ready to use.

3. Makes enough for one 9-inch (23-cm) pie.

Ingredients:

3 tbsp ground cinnamon

2 tsp ground ginger

2 tsp ground nutmeg

1.5 tsp ground allspice

1.5 tsp ground cloves

Directions:

1. Mix together the ingredients until well combined. Store in an airtight container. Use as called for in recipes. Enjoy!
