How to Make Bagel Seasoning

Hello! I’m writing about how to make bagel seasoning. My recipe is unique, and I had the idea for it almost 20 years ago! This is the first time I’ve written about it.

I have a recipe you can use to make your very own bagel seasoning at home. What’s bagel seasoning? It’s a mixture of herbs and spices that you can sprinkle on top of bagels, breads, crackers, or anything else. You can add it to melted butter or oil and spread the mixture on top of your favorite foods. It’s not just for bagels though! I use it on lots of different things.

The basic ingredients are salt, garlic powder, onion powder, pepper, and sugar. You can also add other herbs and spices like paprika, cumin seeds (or ground cumin), thyme leaves (optional), basil leaves (optional), parsley flakes (optional).

Like many people, I love bagels. Bagels are a great breakfast, lunch, or snack food. They are easy to eat and super versatile. You can top them with cream cheese, butter, peanut butter, jelly, eggs and bacon, deli meat and cheese, tuna salad, you name it!

One thing I don’t like about bagels is that they are often a bit dry. They aren’t as moist and soft as I’d like them to be. That’s one of the reasons why my favorite way to eat bagels is toasted with butter.

However, there is another way to make your bagels more flavorful and enjoyable: Bagel Seasoning!

I love Bagel Seasoning because it makes your bagels delicious without adding extra fat or calories (assuming you are using the recipe below). Adding Bagel Seasoning to your bagel is similar to making everything bagel seasoning – except better because the seasoning actually sticks to your bagel and doesn’t fall off.

You can find bagel seasoning at the grocery store, but it is very easy to make your own. All you need are:

Poppy seeds

Sesame seeds

Dehydrated minced onion

Dehydrated minced garlic

Coarse salt (like kosher or pretzel salt)

If you love bagels and are tired of paying $5 for a small jar of bagel seasoning, then you will be thrilled to learn how to make it at home! It really is super simple. The best part? You can customize the blend however you like.

I love making my own seasoning blends because I know exactly what’s in it, plus I can tweak the recipe to suit my taste. With just a few simple ingredients and some spices you likely already have on hand, you can have your own bagel seasoning ready in under 15 minutes.

I used Everything But the Bagel Seasoning as my inspiration for this recipe. I love that stuff, because it really does have everything but the bagel. The only thing missing is the poppy seeds, and that’s by design. The reason is because poppy seeds are illegal in many states and there are lots of people who avoid them for personal or religious reasons.

This is my version that excludes poppy seeds, but feel free to add them if you wish!

When you think of the seasoning on a bagel, the first thing that probably comes to mind is poppy seeds. And while it’s true that poppy seeds are the most common ingredient in bagel seasoning, they’re far from the only ones.

Real bagel seasoning is a blend of different ingredients that often include poppy seeds, sesame seeds, onion flakes, garlic flakes, salt and pepper.

The proportions of each ingredient vary according to preference. Some people like more onion than garlic, for example, and some people like more salt than pepper. I prefer 1 part each poppy seeds, sesame seeds, onion flakes and garlic flakes to 2 parts each salt and pepper. You can make your own blend with whatever proportions you prefer.

Bagel seasoning is great for bagels, but it’s also a good substitute for “everything but the bagel” seasoning. If you don’t have that on hand, you can make your own with a few simple ingredients.

Ingredients:

1/4 cup sesame seeds

1/4 cup poppy seeds

3 tablespoons dried onion flakes

3 tablespoons dried garlic flakes

1 teaspoon coarse salt

Directions:

Combine all ingredients in a small bowl. Store in an airtight container.

It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of Trader Joe’s Everything but the Bagel Seasoning. I put it on eggs, avocados, and pretty much anything else I can think of. The problem is, every time I go to TJ’s they’re out of it! It’s always sold out and I swear they are holding back some secret stash away from the rest of us. So, to stop living in fear of the day when my jar runs out (and to save money), I decided to make my own Everything but the Bagel Seasoning.

I was surprised by how easy it was. All you need are 5 ingredients – everything bagels, sesame seeds, dried garlic, dried onion and sea salt flakes. After making my first batch, I was hooked. There’s something so satisfying about sprinkling your very own custom mix onto everything (literally) you eat.
