Apple pie spice is a blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and sometimes ginger or cloves. It’s an incredibly aromatic blend that adds so much warmth and flavor to your baked goods.

I like using a combination of whole spices as opposed to ground because the aroma and flavor is so much more intense. Plus I love the way they look sprinkled on top of anything – it’s like edible confetti!

My bread and butter is coming up with unique recipes on my blog, and the idea for a homemade apple pie spice mix just came to me one day when I was making a recipe for mini apple pies.

The recipe called for spices that you would normally find in an apple pie (cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice) and I thought – why not combine them all into one blend? After all, they are often used together in sweet recipes like snickerdoodle cookies or chai tea.

I made the spice blend, used it in the recipe (which turned out amazing by the way) and then decided to make it again and use it in other recipes. It can be used in any recipe calling for those four spices. Think oatmeal, smoothies or even yogurt!
