How to Use Adobo Seasoning

Adobo is an all-purpose seasoning that is a staple in the Philippine kitchen. With its tangy and salty taste, it’s no wonder why any dish cooked with adobo is known for its distinct flavor. Since it’s so versatile and flavorful, adobo can be used with almost anything: meats, fishes, sauces, sauteed veggies, stir fries and more!

Try this simple recipe for adobo-steak to give your family a taste of the Philippines! You will need:

Steak – 1 large cut (about 1 kg)

Garlic – 2 cloves, peeled and chopped

White vinegar – 2 cups

Soy Sauce – 3/4 cup or to taste

Salt – A dash or two (optional)

Instructions:

1. Marinate steak in soy sauce for at least 4 hours before cooking. Place steak and marinade in a large pot or casserole dish. Add garlic.

2. Pour vinegar into pot or casserole dish. The vinegar should cover the steak. If it doesn’t, add more vinegar until the steak is covered. Cook on medium heat for about 1 hour and 40 minutes or until tender. Stir occasionally to prevent burning at the bottom

For those who are not aware of what adobo is, it is a cooking method used in many Spanish and Latin American countries. The word adobo means marinade or seasoning in Spanish. It is a traditional cooking ingredient in the Philippines, Mexico, Spain and other Latin-American countries. Adobo is a mixture of vinegar, garlic, oregano and pepper.

The basic ingredients of adobo seasoning include garlic, bay leaves, black peppercorn, white peppercorn and cloves. Together with soy sauce and vinegar they form a basic Latin American marinade which is widely used for meats like chicken or pork before grilling or roasting them.

Adobo is made from vinegar, garlic, bay leaf, black peppercorns and salt. It is used as a meat tenderizer. The mixture of spices enhances the flavor of the meat as well as tenderizes it. Adobo is commonly used in the Philippines in different kinds of dishes like adobo flakes, chicken adobo and even pork adobo. It can be used as marinade for meats or even in soups and stews.

You can prepare adobo seasoning at home using vinegar, garlic and salt. You may also use commercial brands like the McCormick brand or any other brand that you can find in the market that sells spice mixes. To make your own adobo seasoning take 2 cups of apple cider vinegar, 3 tablespoons paprika, 2 tablespoons garlic powder, 1 tablespoon ground black pepper, 1 teaspoon onion powder and 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes or to taste. Mix all these ingredients well until thoroughly blended together then store in an airtight container for future use.

The adobo seasoning recipe can be varied by adding more or less salt, acid or sugar to taste. Adobo seasoning can be cooked using vinegar and garlic or by using soy sauce as the base. Adobo seasoning can also be cooked in a liquid that includes liver and onions to make it more flavorful.

Tofu is a popular food additive for those who are vegetarian or vegan because it has no meat and no animal products used in its production. In fact, tofu has been consumed for centuries in Asian countries like China, Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines.

The term “tofu” is actually an Anglicized pronunciation of the Chinese word “doufu,” which means bean curd. Tofu is made from soybeans, which are soaked, boiled, ground and then strained to produce a soy milk slurry that is poured into molds to form blocks of tofu.
