This DIY spice blend is often used in Chinese cooking and adds a lovely sweet, sour and savory flavor to any dish. If you are looking for the pre-made version, it can be found in most grocers, but I prefer to make my own. What is Chinese Five Spice?

The most common use for Chinese five spice powder in western cuisine is as an ingredient in Chinese duck dishes like Peking Duck but it can also be used as a rub on pork chops before grilling them up!

After the last post on Chinese Spices, I couldn’t resist sharing my favourite “go-to” spice mix – Chinese Five Spice.

I use this spice mix in a wide variety of dishes and it can be used in marinades, stir fries, roasts and even desserts.

Rather than buying the pre-mixed spice at the shops, it is really easy to make your own. Not only will your home made version taste better, you will also be able to control the quantity of salt that you add.

All you need to do is combine all of the spices below in an airtight container and then store in a dry, dark place. If stored correctly, it should keep for around 3 months.

Making your own Chinese five spice recipe is easier than you think. Most of the ingredients can be found in your local supermarket or online, and it literally takes less than 5 minutes to make!

If you are looking for a traditional Chinese five spice recipe, then this is not the right place for you. You can find a number of recipes online for traditional mixes, but in my opinion, nothing compares to this one.

I’ve had authentic Chinese five spice before and it always tastes bitter or stale to me. Maybe it’s just me, but I can never get into it. So when I was introduced to this recipe, I was a little skeptical. After all, how much better can it be than real Chinese five spice?
