Louisiana’s Gumbo File, a blog around 5 things you should know about the gumbo file.

Here are 5 things to know:

1. A gumbo file is the nickname for the file on the “gumbo” scandal that rocked Louisiana politics in the 1970s, and it refers to a box of documents and other evidence collected by State Auditor Ernest “Dutch” Morial during his investigation.

2. The gumbo file was not just a list of names; it included dates, times, and places of kickback payments from businessmen to politicians, as well as their sources of income.

3. The gumbo file originally contained 43 names of state senators and representatives but was never released because the names were blacked out by the FBI before being turned over to the press.

4. Although it was called a “file,” it was actually a box filled with 3-by-5 index cards with handwritten notes by Morial’s staff and copies of canceled checks and blacked-out news clippings.

5. The gumbo file was stored in a safe at home—not at his office—and when he died, Morial left no instructions about what should be done with

There are several versions of the gumbo file. The one I am most familiar with is a set of slides put together by Justin B. Rye and his research team at the University of New Orleans Center for Coastal Resiliency, and this is the version that will be discussed in this post.

On these slides, there are five sections: Receiving and Distributing Water, Wave Energy (on the Louisiana coast), Wave Energy (in other places), Storm Surge, and Other Waters. Each section has its own set of two or three slides that are linked together by a narrative. These narratives provide an overview of some aspect of coastal Louisiana’s environment, often followed by a discussion of how the coastal engineering industry has responded to these issues or how the people affected by these issues would like to see them resolved.

The 5 Things to Know About Louisiana’s Gumbo File slide set is designed to give you a quick overview of coastal Louisiana’s environment (specifically as it relates to coastal engineering) without overwhelming you with information. It is an excellent resource for students and teachers alike who are interested in learning about coastal Louisiana and its unique environment.*

I’m not a big fan of “How to make your blog successful in 10 easy steps” articles. They almost never work, but they always sound like they should. So I’m not going to give you a list of five steps you can follow to make your blog successful (though I will say that the first step is…have something interesting or funny to say).

To him, it was just like eating gumbo because the mixture is all over the place. There is no rhyme or reason as to what ends up in this file and why. It often times seems arbitrary when one case ends up here and another does not.
