The opportunity to do something great rarely comes to us. Instead, it usually shows up when we are doing our regular jobs. The chance encounter that leads to greatness often happens while you are driving a bus, or working the counter at a hot dog stand. It happens while you are writing blog posts, or sending out e-mail blasts to drum up business.

Have you ever felt that you had a dream job, but also felt like it was taking too long to get where you wanted to be?

I have definitely felt this way. I worked at the same company for almost seven years before I got promoted. I didn’t feel like I was doing anything wrong, and in fact was consistently reviewed as a top performer by my manager and my peers, but it just took a while to get that promotion.

The problem with holding on to a job and waiting for something to happen is that you’re missing out on all the other opportunities that could be out there. You might be creating your dream job somewhere else if you only had the courage to go after it!

I quit my job last year, and am now working as a freelance writer. It’s been a little scary because things have been slow to get started, but now I’m seeing more work come in than I’ve ever seen before. The tough times are over, and now I have time and energy to pursue other dreams (like traveling the world). And it’s all due to the courage I gained from leaving my old job.

I recently took a vacation in the Bahamas and met a young man who was a bartender. We struck up a conversation and it turns out he was working on what I like to call his dream job. His dream job is to be an actor and a comedian. For me, this is an exciting idea because I have always wanted to be an actor and a comedian as well.

The young man’s name is Jayfal, he’s from New Jersey and he’s been acting since he can remember. He has quite the following of fans on YouTube and Facebook. He also has quite the following of critics who think that he’s wasting his time and that he should get a “real job”.

The thing is, Jayfal has a “real” job as well. He’s working hard at creating his dream job as an actor, but also works hard at his day job as a bartender so that he can live out his childhood dream while not having to worry about putting food on the table.

What I really liked about Jayfal was that although he seems like someone who would be popular, he wasn’t stuck up or full of himself. We just happened to strike up a conversation, we didn’t even talk about comedy or acting, we talked about traveling instead.

How do you find the job of your dreams? The answer is simple: you talk to people. But most people don’t realize this, and they spend their lives doing jobs they hate.

They don’t talk to people.

If you’re reading this, you have Internet access. That’s more than most people. Use it, and start talking to people. It will be one of the smartest things you ever did.

I hope my story can help you to achieve your own greatness. My blog will be about my journey from small-town boy in Kansas to a successful entrepreneur and world traveler. I will write about how I took advantage of opportunities that came my way, some planned and others that were just luck. I learned many valuable lessons along the way, and I hope to share them with you.

Have you ever felt like you are following your passion, only to suddenly realize that you are really just following a paycheck?

I know that I have. It’s easy to get caught up in the fantasy of having a dream job, only to find yourself in a job that isn’t really fulfilling your needs. For some reason, we have been taught to think of a job as an end-all, instead of a means-to-an-end.

Tune out the noise and make sure that the job you are looking for is truly going to fulfill your needs. If it doesn’t look like it will, then it might be time to reevaluate what you want out of life. Then go after it! Don’t let anything stand in your way!
